About the Suzuki GSX-R 1000
The Suzuki GSX-R 1000 has been Suzuki's litre supersport since 2001 and ranks among the benchmark machines in the class. The 999 cc inline-four makes around 178 hp on the Dutch registration, with later generations claiming up to 202 hp from the factory. Kerb weight sits near 186 kg, paired with an upside-down fork, radial Brembo brakes and, from the L7 (2017), variable valve timing (VVT) developed in MotoGP. The K5-K6 (2005-2006) is widely regarded as one of the most beloved generations.
The GSX-R 1000 targets experienced riders chasing the pure performance of a modern litre supersport. It is intended for track days, sporty weekend rides and, for those who can tolerate the ergonomics, as a bike worth showcasing. For commuting it is less practical thanks to the aggressive stance. Direct rivals are the Honda CBR1000RR, Yamaha YZF-R1, Kawasaki ZX-10R and BMW S 1000 RR; the Suzuki stands out with its MotoGP-derived VVT and strong used-market value.

What to check before buying
- Ask whether the stator has been replaced or tested; K6-K8 models are known for weak stators that can drain the battery within a single ride.
- Check the voltage regulator/rectifier; discoloured or melted connectors indicate overheating and a future repair bill.
- Listen for cam-chain tensioner rattle on cold start; on K6-K8 bikes especially, a clatter from the cylinder head is a recognised wear item.
- Check fairings, bar-end and footpeg mounts for track-day damage that only becomes visible once panels are removed; ask about circuit history and laps run.
- On L7+ bikes with VVT, ask whether the annual service schedule has been kept; the VVT system is sensitive to oil viscosity, so use of the correct grade matters.
