Generations and editions
Features and handling differ by generation. Use this overview to find the right version.
Years
2013 - 2018
2013-2018 air/liquid-cooled (K50)
GenerationThe comprehensively redesigned K50 brought precision air/liquid cooling, vertical flow, an integrated gearbox, wet anti-hopping clutch and ride-by-wire. The 2017 Euro 4 and electronics update did not change its core engine and chassis figures.
Years
2010 - 2012
2010-2012 DOHC (K25)
GenerationThe final air/oil-cooled K25 uses radially arranged valves and twin overhead camshafts per cylinder. It revs more freely, makes more torque and retains the dry clutch and 229 kg base platform.
Years
2008 - 2009
2008-2009 facelift (K25)
GenerationThe K25 facelift gained five per cent more power, a revised six-speed gearbox, updated ergonomics and optional Enduro ESA. It retained air/oil cooling, the dry clutch and the earlier boxer's character.
Years
2004 - 2007
2004-2007 air/oil-cooled (K25)
GenerationThe first K25 combines the air/oil-cooled boxer with a dry clutch and the family's lowest ready-to-ride weight. It is identified by the early bodywork and, through model year 2006, optional servo-assisted Integral ABS.
About the Bmw R 1200 GS
The BMW R 1200 GS was BMW's standard travel enduro from 2004 through 2018. Every generation uses a 1,170 cc flat twin, shaft drive, Telelever front suspension and Paralever rear suspension. The air/oil-cooled engine started at 74 kW, rose to 77 kW for 2008 and gained DOHC heads with 81 kW in 2010. For 2013, the new air/liquid-cooled K50 added a wet clutch, ride-by-wire and 92 kW. This page excludes the separate R 1200 GS Adventure, with its larger tank, taller seat and higher ready-to-ride weight.
The standard GS suits riders wanting one motorcycle for commuting, back roads and touring. Its wide handlebar and low boxer centre of gravity help at low speed, but an 840 to 870 mm seat range and 225 to 238 kg ready-to-ride weight demand experience; no generation is A2-eligible at standard output. It is comfortable and stable on asphalt, while generous suspension travel and optional cross-spoke wheels support unpaved touring. Used rivals include the KTM 1190 Adventure, Triumph Tiger Explorer/Tiger 1200 and Ducati Multistrada 1200. Prioritise documented servicing, correct generation and completed recalls over accessories.

What to check before buying
- Use BMW's VIN checker to confirm the fuel-pump campaign was completed, then inspect the flange around the quick-release coupling for cracks, fuel odour or seepage.
- On bikes built from November 2003 to April 2011, confirm the recalled aluminium rear-wheel flange was replaced; over-tightened wheel bolts could cause cracks.
- On liquid-cooled bikes built from November 2013 to June 2017, ask for proof of the fork service campaign and inspect beneath the rubber gaiter for a gap, oil leak or looseness after a severe impact.
- For early bikes, check market- and VIN-specific brake actions, including brake-line/ABS wiring work on 2004-2005 examples and certain 2008 ABS modules; every warning lamp must complete its self-test correctly.
- Inspect the shaft-drive housing and final drive for oil leakage and, with the rear wheel unloaded, feel for excessive play; this is a general pre-purchase check even when no fault is reported.
