The Kawasaki Ninja 650 is a middleweight sport-tourer powered by a 649 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin with a 180-degree crankshaft, sold since 2006 (originally as the ER-6f, fully redesigned in 2017 on a new steel trellis frame). Full-power versions deliver about 50 kW with a flat torque curve that pulls cleanly from 4,000 rpm, while a 35 kW A2-licence variant is offered alongside. ABS is standard and recent model years add a slipper clutch and TFT display with smartphone connectivity.
It is aimed at commuters, A2 graduates and riders who want sport-bike styling without a committed riding position. The 790 mm seat and modest weight keep it approachable, while the half-clip-on bars and firm suspension still cope with weekend tours and twisty roads. Key rivals are the Yamaha YZF-R7, Honda CBR650R and Suzuki SV650/GSX-8R.
Check the clutch slave cylinder behind the front sprocket cover for oil weeping; it tends to fail with mileage.
On a cold start, watch the TFT or LCD dash for missing pixels; replacement is expensive.
Inspect the exhaust silencer and gaskets for corrosion, particularly on winter-used Dutch examples.
Listen for an uneven idle that suggests the throttle bodies need a sync and clean.
Ask for chain-and-sprocket service history; neglected chains wear inside 15,000 km.
