About the Honda RVF 400
The Honda RVF400R is a 400 cc sports motorcycle powered by a 399 cc V4 engine, first introduced in 1986 and perfected with the legendary NC35 generation in 1994. The RVF400 was developed for the Japanese market as a homologation machine for the 400cc class, renowned for its sophisticated V4 architecture with hollow camshafts and gear-driven cams, technology derived directly from Honda's RC45 Superbike. The engine produces around 53 hp in European specification (59 hp in Japanese trim).
The RVF400R is a demanding sports motorcycle for experienced riders. The riding position is extremely aggressive and the high-maintenance schedule, including gear-driven camshafts, makes ownership both time-intensive and expensive. Despite this, the RVF400 is prized as a collector's piece and track machine. In the classic segment it competes with the Yamaha FZR400 and Kawasaki ZXR400.

What to check before buying
- Check gear-driven camshaft wear and backlash; maintenance is complex and costly; an overdue schedule leads to serious engine damage.
- Inspect the thermostat and cooling system: the V4 engine has multiple cooling circuits; watch for temperature swings and leaking hoses.
- Check all four carburettors for even synchronisation and clean jets; uneven tuning is common after extended storage.
- Inspect steering head bearings and swingarm pivot for wear; intensive track use accelerates wear significantly.
