About the Yamaha YZF R1
The Yamaha YZF-R1 has been Yamaha's litre supersport since 1998. The 998 cc inline-four with the crossplane crank (from 2009 onward, 'CP4') gives an unmistakable V-twin-like engine note and a flat torque curve that translates beautifully to the track. Output is around 200 hp; the Dutch RDW median across all generations reads 171 hp. Kerb weight is a class-leading ~200 kg with the seat at 855 mm. From 2015 (5th generation) the R1 has a MotoGP-derived IMU package with traction control, slide control and wheelie control.
The YZF-R1 targets experienced riders looking for track DNA in its purest form. It is intended for track days, sporty weekend rides and, for those who can tolerate the ergonomics, as a showcase machine. For commuting it is less practical thanks to the aggressive ergonomics. Direct rivals are the Honda CBR1000RR-R, Suzuki GSX-R 1000, Kawasaki ZX-10R and BMW S 1000 RR.
