About this model

About the Yamaha MT 10

The Yamaha MT-10 is Yamaha's litre-class naked, in production since 2016. Under the tank sits a 998 cc CP4 four-cylinder borrowed from the YZF-R1, retuned for stronger low- and mid-range torque. Power output is around 165 hp and kerb weight is a class-light 212 kg. The seat sits at 835 mm. From 2022 (Gen 2) the MT-10 gains a comprehensive electronics suite with a six-axis IMU, cruise control, three riding modes and a bidirectional quickshifter.

The MT-10 targets experienced riders who want the immediacy of a YZF-R1 powerplant in an upright chassis. It is at home on sporty solo rides, short pillion trips and, for those who can tolerate the ergonomics, commuting. Direct rivals are the Kawasaki Z H2, BMW S 1000 R, Aprilia Tuono V4 and KTM 1290 Super Duke; the Yamaha stands out with its R1-derived engine and, from Gen 2 onward, class-leading electronics for the price.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Ask whether the stator has been tested or replaced; early CP4 models are known for low-output charging issues during intensive city use.
  • Check chain stretch and sprocket hooking; the YZF-R1-derived power loads 530-pitch chains heavily.
  • Inspect brake calipers for sticking; on bikes that sat for long periods, the pistons can seize.
  • On Gen 1 bikes (2016-2021), test throttle-response mapping on the ride; some owners report snatchy behaviour under 4.000 rpm in town.
  • On Gen 2 bikes (2022+), test every electronic feature (cruise, IMU, riding modes); an IMU fault disables multiple systems at once.
