MT 09

The Yamaha MT-09 is a sporting naked bike built around Yamaha's liquid-cooled CP3 inline triple. The first European version arrived in September 2013 as a 2014 model, combining 847 cc with a light aluminium frame and an upright, supermoto-influenced riding position. A recognisable update followed for 2017, bringing the four-projector LED face, an assist-and-slipper clutch, quickshifter and a more adjustable fork. Yamaha comprehensively reworked the platform in 2021: capacity grew to 890 cc, the frame and wheels became lighter, and a six-axis IMU governed lean-sensitive rider aids. The 2024 update retained the 890 cc engine while revising ergonomics, suspension, braking controls, dashboard and ride modes. Y-AMT also joined the range in 2024, pairing the same engine with an automated six-speed transmission that can shift by finger command or operate fully automatically.

Strong midrange torque, compact dimensions and a wide handlebar make the MT-09 particularly effective on twisting roads, daily commutes and energetic solo rides. Its riding position is less demanding than a supersport's, although wind protection and passenger accommodation remain modest; a screen and luggage are worthwhile for sustained motorway use. The full-power versions covered here are not A2-eligible; Yamaha offers separate 35 kW models derived from a 70 kW base version. Model year matters when shopping used: the 847 cc bikes feel simpler and more raw, while the 890 cc generations add more sophisticated electronics and a substantially different chassis. Key alternatives include the Triumph Street Triple 765, Kawasaki Z900 and KTM 890 Duke. Compare generation, service history, desired rider aids and manual versus Y-AMT transmission rather than judging examples on price alone.
