The Triumph Tiger 1200 is Triumph's flagship adventure tourer, built around a 1,215 cc T-plane inline triple with shaft drive. The engine produces around 110 kW (150 hp) and pulls cleanly from low revs with the brand's signature triple character. The Tiger 1200 replaced the older Tiger Explorer in 2012 and was completely overhauled in 2022 with a new chassis, semi-active Showa suspension and substantially reduced weight. It comes in GT trims with cast wheels for paved touring and Rally trims with spoked 21"/18" wheels for serious off-road use.
The Tiger 1200 targets experienced riders who cover long distances and want to combine comfort, luggage capacity and off-road capability. It is a direct rival to the BMW R 1250 GS and KTM 1290 Super Adventure. Seat height (850-875 mm), kerb weight and price keep it out of beginner territory. Standard kit includes cruise control, pannier mounts, full-IMU electronics (riding modes, traction control, cornering ABS) and LED lighting; later examples add blind-spot radar.
On pre-2022 models check the shaft drive rubber coupling and centre bearing for play and oil weeping.
Inspect the steering head bearings; off-road use wears these faster than purely tarmac touring.
Ask whether the TFT dashboard and ride-by-wire firmware updates have been applied; early units had glitches.
Check the ABS pump body and brake calipers for corrosion; long outdoor storage accelerates this.
Test every riding mode and the cruise control on a test ride; sensor faults can throw intermittent errors.
