About the Indian Chieftain
The Indian Chieftain is a full-dress bagger tourer that Indian Motorcycle has produced since 2014 after Polaris revived the brand in 2011. Early model years carry the air-cooled Thunderstroke 111 V-twin (1811 cc); from 2020 onward Indian gradually moved to the Thunderstroke 116 (1890 cc) and the liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine in Chieftain Limited and Dark Horse trims. Standard features include a fixed batwing fairing with electrically adjustable windshield, hard side cases, an infotainment system with navigation, and cruise control. Drive is via belt and a six-speed gearbox.
The Chieftain targets the touring rider who wants the comfort and luggage of a full-dress bagger combined with V-twin torque. With a low 660 mm seat the bike is approachable, but its considerable mass means low-speed manoeuvring takes practice. On the motorway it is calm and stable, with touring comfort comparable to a Harley-Davidson Street Glide or BMW R 18 Transcontinental. In the Netherlands the dealer network is limited to a handful of importers, so plan extra travel for service and OEM parts. Expect roughly 6 L/100 km at relaxed touring speeds.

What to check before buying
- Inspect Thunderstroke base and head gaskets for oil weeping at higher mileage
- Test all infotainment and navigation functions; known to be vulnerable to software glitches and updates
- Check the stator and regulator/rectifier, especially on pre-2017 examples
- Feel for play in the fairing and saddlebag mounts; rattles develop after long distance touring
- Verify belt tension and rear wheel bearings; ask for documented service history from an Indian dealer
