Years2022–present
The modern Nightster uses the liquid-cooled 975cc Revolution Max and a much lighter stressed-engine chassis. Standard and Special share the technical base; RH975, 975 or Revolution Max identify this generation.

Years2007–2012
The original Nightster is an air-cooled 1,202cc Sportster with five-speed gearbox, lowered suspension and classic Evolution engineering. XL1200N, 1200 or 1202 are the distinguishing terms.
1,202 cc · 67 hp · 2 cyl.
Harley-Davidson has used the Nightster name for two technically distinct compact cruisers. The 2007–2012 XL1200N is an air-cooled Sportster with a 1,202cc Evolution V-twin, rubber-mounted chassis, lowered suspension and dark bobber details. Since 2022 Nightster has returned as the RH975 with a liquid-cooled 975cc Revolution Max, stressed-engine chassis, modern electronics and substantially lower weight. Nightster Special shares the modern engine base and mainly adds equipment and passenger accommodation.
The XL1200N suits riders wanting traditional Harley character, simple engineering and broad aftermarket support; vibration, short suspension travel and age-related maintenance come with it. The modern Nightster is lighter, brakes better and adds riding modes and traction control, but is electronically more complex and sounds less traditional. Always verify year, capacity and type code: XL1200N and RH975 are not successive trims of one chassis.
On the XL1200N inspect rocker-box, cam-cover and crankcase seals for oil weeping or fresh cleaning traces.
Inspect XL1200N rubber engine mounts, swingarm bearings and steering-head bearings for play or instability during throttle changes.
Test clutch, primary chain and charging voltage hot; heavy shifts, rattling or low voltage warrant investigation.
On the RH975 verify all software campaigns and test cold starting, riding modes, traction control and dashboard for returning faults.
Inspect RH975 coolant hoses, expansion tank and radiator for leakage or crash damage and let the cooling fan operate.
