1999–2001 996 SPS
EditionThe 996 SPS is the homologation-focused trim with a more highly tuned 996cc Desmoquattro and race-oriented components. Match it only with explicit SPS documentation; a standard 996 with accessories is not an SPS.
Years
1998 - 2001
1998–2001 996
GenerationThe regular 996 is the fuel-injected 996cc Desmoquattro superbike succeeding the 916, with dry clutch, steel trellis frame and single-sided swingarm. Biposto is a seating/subframe configuration within this technical base, not a separate engine generation.
About the Ducati 996
The Ducati 996 is an Italian superbike produced from 1998 to 2001 as the successor to the iconic 916. Its engine is a 996 cc L-twin with desmodromic valve actuation, a dry multi-plate clutch and carburettor fuel delivery. In World Superbike competition the 996 was extremely successful: Carl Fogarty won the world title in 1999 and Troy Bayliss took the championship in 2001. Massimo Tamburini's iconic design, with the signature Öhlins suspension and single-sided swingarm, continues the 916's visual language.
The 996 targets experienced riders drawn to classic Ducati racing culture. Its riding position is committed and sporty, and its steering response is precise. Daily use is less comfortable due to the tight geometry, but on fast mountain roads and track days it excels. The 996 is increasingly regarded as a collector's piece, with clean examples appreciating in value. Contemporary rivals included the Honda RC51 and Suzuki TL1000R.

What to check before buying
- Desmodromic valve service is required every 12,000–15,000 km; check the service book for documented Ducati-dealer or recognised specialist history.
- Check the dry clutch for wear and rattling at idle; some rattle is normal, but heavy wear increases replacement costs significantly.
- Inspect the frame around the front engine mounts for hairline cracks and fatigue fractures (a known issue on older 916/996 series bikes).
- Check the radiator and cooling system for leaks: the 996 runs hot in traffic and reaches temperature quickly.
- Inspect the instrument cluster connections and wiring harness: after 25 years, electrical reliability is a growing concern.
