Buell is an American sportbike manufacturer founded in 1983 by former Harley-Davidson engineer Erik Buell in East Troy, Wisconsin. The brand built its reputation on Harley-derived air-cooled V-twins paired with unconventional engineering: fuel carried in the frame, oil in the swingarm, a perimeter (ZTL) front brake and heavy mass-centralisation for agile handling. Its best-known machines are the tube-frame Lightning and the XB series (Firebolt XB9R/XB12R and Lightning XB9S/XB12S), later joined by the liquid-cooled, Rotax-powered 1125R. Harley-Davidson owned Buell from 1998 to 2009 before closing it; Erik Buell continued as Erik Buell Racing (EBR), and the Buell name was revived again around 2021 under new ownership.
