R 1250 GS

The BMW R 1250 GS was the flagship of BMW's adventure-touring lineup from 2019 to 2023. Its 1254 cc boxer introduced ShiftCam variable valve timing, lifting output to 136 hp and 143 Nm with a notably flatter, broader torque curve than the R 1200 GS. Power is fed through a shaft drive, a feature high-mileage owners value. Cornering ABS Pro, four ride modes, ASC stability and grip control and a 6.5-inch TFT dash are standard; Dynamic ESA, cruise control and keyless ignition are common factory options.

The R 1250 GS is the obvious choice for long-distance work, solo or with a passenger and luggage. At a kerb weight around 249 kg it asks for more upper-body input in slow manoeuvres than a middleweight, but above 50 km/h it is remarkably stable. Standard seat height is 850/870 mm with the two-position seat; lower and taller options are factory-fitted. Competitors include the Ducati Multistrada V4, KTM 1290 Super Adventure, Triumph Tiger 1200 and Honda Africa Twin. It remains one of the most sought-after used buys in the class, with broad dealer support and long lead times for its successor.
