About the Yamaha YZF R6
The Yamaha YZF-R6 is a 600 cc supersport produced from 1999 to 2020 and widely regarded as a benchmark in the class. The 599 cc inline-four revs to 16.500 rpm and produces around 120 hp in factory specs (Dutch RDW median reads 118-120 hp). Kerb weight is a light 190 kg and the seat sits at 850 mm. From 2017 the R6 gained an extensive electronics package with IMU-driven traction control, ABS and quickshifter, alongside a Magneti Marelli ECU and upside-down KYB fork. In 2021 the R6 was withdrawn from the EU on Euro 5 grounds and continues only as a track-only model.
The R6 targets experienced riders who deliberately want a 600 supersport for its high-rev character and sharp handling. It is well suited to track days and sporty solo rides; for commuting the ergonomics are punishing. Period rivals were the Honda CBR 600 RR, Suzuki GSX-R 600, Kawasaki ZX-6R and Triumph Daytona 675.
