About this model
About the Yamaha YZ 125
The Yamaha YZ125 is a purpose-built motocross racer powered by a 125cc two-stroke engine and has been one of the most successful bikes in the 125cc class for decades. Yamaha has produced the YZ125 continuously since 1974, with a major redesign in 2005 introducing an aluminium frame. The two-stroke engine delivers an exceptionally light package with a characteristic and aggressive powerband.
The YZ125 is strictly an off-road competition machine with no road homologation or lighting. It targets experienced riders and racers seeking a nimble, lightweight motocross bike. The tall seat height and aggressive geometry make it unsuitable for beginners. Direct competitors include the KTM 125 SX and Husqvarna TC 125.

Before you buy
What to check before buying
- Check the piston and cylinder bore for wear; two-strokes require regular top-end rebuilds (every 30–50 riding hours)
- Inspect the exhaust port and powervalve (YPVS) for carbon build-up that restricts power
- Check the cooling system for leaks at the radiators and water pump
- Ask for maintenance history covering clutch and gearbox wear from hard use
- Inspect frame and subframe for cracks from crash damage
