First generation (2013-2017)

About the Yamaha X Max 400
The Yamaha X-MAX 400 is a GT scooter positioned between the compact XMAX 300 and twin-cylinder TMAX. The 2013–2017 first generation uses roomy bodywork, a 395 cc single and large 14-litre tank. The fully redesigned model from 2018 became more compact and lighter and added traction control, keyless operation and LED lighting while retaining relaxed motorway performance and generous storage.
The X-MAX 400 suits commuters who regularly use motorways and want more reserve than a 300 without TMAX weight and costs. When buying, check CVT servicing, cold starting and every electrical convenience feature. It is broad and relatively heavy at walking pace but stable with passenger and luggage. A bike with its original drivetrain, correct tyres and documented belt changes is generally preferable to one fitted with cheap variator modifications.

What to check before buying
- Check invoices for the CVT belt, rollers and filters; neglected servicing causes judder, slip or drivetrain rattle.
- Start cold and check for reluctant starting, uneven idle or coolant leaks around the water pump and hoses.
- Test keyless operation, traction control, ABS, instruments and every switch; moisture and weak batteries cause faults.
- Inspect steering-head bearings, forks and tyres for cupping; the scooter's mass makes wear obvious at low speed.
