About the Yamaha TZR
The Yamaha TZR is a series of two-stroke sport motorcycles produced from 1984 onwards. The most popular version in Europe is the TZR125, a 125cc two-stroke single-cylinder sportbike built from 1987 to 1995. With a water-cooled cylinder block and the YPVS exhaust valve system (Yamaha Power Valve System), the TZR125 produces up to 29 hp, the maximum permitted power for the 125cc class. The full-fairing racing-inspired design and low, aggressive riding position made it hugely popular with young riders.
The TZR125 targets young and experienced riders with an A1 or B licence who want a genuine sport motorcycle in the 125cc class. The riding behaviour is sharp and direct, but demanding: the power arrives high in the rev range (above 8,000 rpm), which is less forgiving for beginners. Competitors include the Honda NSR125 and Aprilia RS125. Today, original examples are becoming collectible.

What to check before buying
- Check the YPVS mechanism (exhaust valve); a seized valve is a known complaint and significantly affects power delivery.
- Inspect the water pump and coolant hoses for leaks; an overheating two-stroke engine seizes quickly.
- Test idle quality for a stable, even idle; rich or lean carburettor jetting is clearly audible on two-strokes.
- Examine cylinder and piston condition on high-mileage examples; two-stroke seals wear faster than four-stroke equivalents.
- Check for unauthorised modifications affecting road legality; many TZR125s have been altered.
