Years2015–2020
The first Tracer generation uses the 847cc CP3 from the MT-09 with a longer subframe, taller screen and 18-litre tank. The same motorcycle is called FJ-09 in North America; verify year, original luggage hardware and the condition of the first-generation suspension.
847 cc · 115 hp · 3 cyl.
The Yamaha Tracer 9 has been the entry-level sport-tourer in the Tracer 9 family since 2021. It shares the 890 cc CP3 triple with the MT-09 and produces 119 hp. The chassis adds a longer wheelbase, taller bars, a larger touring screen and a TFT display. Kerb weight sits at roughly 213 kg with the seat at 810 mm. Three riding modes, traction control, slide control, lift control and a bidirectional quickshifter come standard. The Tracer 9 GT adds KYB semi-active suspension, cruise control, heated grips and side panniers.
The Tracer 9 targets riders who want MT-09 directness combined with more comfort and motorway stability. It is well suited to commuting, sporty solo rides and weekend trips with a pillion. Direct rivals include the Kawasaki Versys 650, Honda NT1100, BMW F 900 XR and Triumph Tiger Sport 660; the Yamaha stands out with its triple-cylinder character and a chassis that feels lighter than the kerb weight suggests.
Test the standard suspension with pillion and luggage; non-GT bikes have manually adjustable preload that needs setting for two-up touring.
Inspect chain stretch and sprocket hooking; the triple loads torque mid-range and wears the set faster than a four-cylinder.
Check the standard LED headlight for internal condensation; on some bikes the seal struggles with prolonged wet weather.
Ask whether the A-mode mapping has been refined on early bikes; caution at low revs.
On dropped bikes, inspect fairings around bar-end and grip mounts for hairline cracks; the sharp styling shows damage quickly.
