The Yamaha Tracer 9 GT is a sport-tourer launched in 2021 as the top trim of the Tracer 9 lineup. It shares the 890 cc CP3 triple with the MT-09 and produces 119 hp, but adds full-LED lighting, a two-piece aluminium dash with twin 3.5" TFTs, semi-active KYB suspension, cruise control, heated grips and standard panniers. Kerb weight with panniers is around 220 kg and the seat sits at 820 mm. From 2024 the Tracer 9 GT+ adds radar-assisted adaptive cruise as standard.
The Tracer 9 GT targets riders who want MT-09 punch combined with proper touring capability. It is well suited to weekend rides with a pillion, long motorway sections and spirited solo riding. Direct rivals are the Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE, BMW S 1000 XR, Triumph Tiger Sport 660 and Honda NT1100; the Yamaha stands out with its three-cylinder drivetrain, semi-active suspension and near-complete electronics suite for the price.
Check the semi-active KYB suspension on the test ride; sensor faults can lock the damping into a fail-safe setting.
Test all luggage cases and locks; early bikes had pannier locks that were stiff after long storage or cold weather.
Inspect chain stretch and sprocket hooking; the mass with pillion and luggage wears the sprocket set faster than expected.
Ask whether the original battery has been replaced; the standby load from the electronics drains the battery during multi-week storage.
On the Tracer 9 GT+ (2024 onwards), test the adaptive-cruise radar in dry and wet weather; the sensor in the front cowl is dirt-sensitive.
