Years
1973 - 1975
The original RD350 is a light, air-cooled 347cc two-stroke twin with Autolube oil injection. Its direct power delivery and simple engineering make crank, piston and carburettor condition more meaningful than mileage.
The Yamaha RD350 is a Japanese two-stroke twin produced across several generations from 1973 to 1995. The air-cooled original (1973–1975) made around 39 hp; the liquid-cooled RD350LC (1980–1982) produced 47 hp; and the YPVS variant (RD350F, 1983–1995) extracted around 59 hp from just 347 cc using Yamaha's Power Valve System. Combining low weight (~147 kg) with exceptional power density, the RD series became a cult motorcycle that underpinned Yamaha's racing programme for over a decade.
The RD350 is not for beginners: the two-stroke powerband and abrupt power delivery demand experience and anticipation. On European club circuits and sweeping roads it was a favourite of amateur racers and keen tourers alike. Main rivals were the Suzuki GT380 and Kawasaki H1 500. Well-preserved examples today are collectibles with an active owners club scene.
