About the Yamaha FZ 1
The Yamaha FZ-1 is a powerful naked sportbike powered by a 998 cc inline-four derived from the R1 engine. With 150 hp, the FZ-1 combines supersport performance with an upright, more accessible riding position. The bike is offered in two variants: the naked FZ-1 N and the half-faired FZ-1 Fazer with windscreen. Both variants share the same chassis, handling geometry, and engine. Production ran from 2006 to 2015, following an earlier generation (2001–2005) based on the 2001 R1 engine.
The FZ-1 appeals to riders who want serious performance without the full compromise of a supersport machine. The riding position is comfortable enough for daily use and longer rides, while the engine performance remains impressive on twisty roads. Rivals include the Suzuki GSX-S1000 and Kawasaki Z1000. The FZ-1 demands riding experience given the power output, but thanks to good traction control it is more manageable than the numbers suggest.

What to check before buying
- Check the throttle for smooth operation; first-generation FZ-1 units have an abrupt throttle response that requires experience in wet conditions.
- Check the cooling system for leaks at the radiator and water pump; regular servicing is required.
- Inspect the front forks for oil leaks and worn seals; 15,000 km is the average rebuild interval under sporty riding.
- Check the chain tensioner and sprockets for wear; high torque accelerates chain wear.
- Inspect the exhaust for rust and leaks at the joints; a common concern on older examples.
