About the Ktm 690 SMC
The KTM 690 SMC is a single-cylinder supermoto built between 2008 and 2011 as the successor to the 640 Supermoto. The steel trellis frame carries the LC4 engine: a liquid-cooled four-stroke single, initially 654 cc. Standard models produced around 63 hp; A2-licence variants were restricted to 35 kW / 47 hp. With a dry weight of roughly 140 kg, aggressive geometry and fully adjustable WP upside-down forks, the riding experience is classic KTM supermoto: minimalist, upright and exceptionally flickable. ABS was not offered on this generation.
The 690 SMC targets the experienced rider who lives for inner-city traffic, twisty mountain roads and corner work. Its light weight and instant throttle response make it perfect for learning wheelies and rear-wheel slides, but it is not built for long motorway days: narrow seat, minimal wind protection and noticeable single-cylinder vibration at cruising speeds. Direct rivals at launch were the Husqvarna SM 610, Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 and the Suzuki DR-Z400SM. From 2012 the 690 SMC R replaced this base model. As a used buy it offers a stripped-back, mechanical alternative, provided the service book is complete.

What to check before buying
- Check the service book carefully: the LC4 demands strict service intervals (oil change roughly every 7,500 km, valve clearance every 15,000 km) and otherwise suffers premature valve-train and balance-shaft wear.
- Look for oil seepage around the cylinder head and water-pump seal; KTM singles are prone to this and the repair is labour-intensive.
- Test the hydraulic APTC slipper clutch: it can squeal or grab after hard use if the oil is contaminated.
- Inspect the frame around the footpeg mounts and steering head for hairline cracks; supermotos often live a tough life.
- Check the rear shock and linkage: the WP damper typically needs a rebuild around 30,000 km and seal leaks are common.
