About the Ktm 640 Duke
The KTM 640 Duke is an air-cooled LC4 single-cylinder of 625 cc produced by KTM from 1999 to 2006. Known as the Duke II, it is a streetfighter with stark, aggressive lines and a tall riding position. Producing 44 kW (60 hp) at just 148 kg, it is exceptionally agile and fast in urban conditions. The SOHC engine with liquid-cooled cylinder head (later models) and a balance shaft to reduce vibration represented a technical advancement over the 600 LC4.
The 640 Duke targets experienced riders seeking a lively, lightweight streetbike with a pronounced character. Its low weight and strong torque make it outstanding for spirited city riding and twisty mountain roads; it is not a touring motorcycle. Beginners should be cautious: the tall seat height and direct engine response demand experience. Direct competitors include the Aprilia Moto 6.5 and Husqvarna SM 610.

What to check before buying
- Check cylinder head temperature: the air-cooled LC4 can overheat during intensive urban use.
- Inspect balance shaft bearings for wear; noticeable vibration above 5,000 rpm indicates worn bearings.
- Check valve clearances; adjustment is required every 6,000 km and is frequently deferred.
- Ask about carburettor needle and diaphragm condition; ageing leads to lean carburation at part throttle.
- Inspect the frame for cracks at the subframe junction, especially on examples used intensively on road.
