The second MT-03 shares Yamaha's 321cc twin with the YZF-R3 in a light, accessible naked chassis.
Years
2006 - 2014
The first MT-03 used a 660cc single with playful supermoto-style chassis dynamics and simple ownership.
The Yamaha MT-03 nameplate has been in use since 2006 but refers to two completely different bikes. The original MT-03 (2006-2014) was a naked based on the 660 cc XT660 single, making around 48 hp with a budget naked-cruiser stance. The modern MT-03 (2016-present) is a light 321 cc parallel twin based on the YZF-R3, producing around 42 hp with a kerb weight of roughly 168 kg, aimed squarely at A2-licence riders.
When shopping the used market it is essential to know which generation you are looking at. Both are entry-level bikes but with very different characters. The modern 321 cc MT-03 is well suited to city use, commuting and short trips; the older 660 cc version is more of a budget naked-cruiser. Direct rivals to the modern MT-03 are the Honda CB300R, Kawasaki Z400 and KTM 390 Duke; the Yamaha stands out with its R3-derived drivetrain and broad dealer network.
