About the Kawasaki 500 SE
The Kawasaki GPZ 500 S (also known as the Ninja 500R / EX500) is a faired parallel-twin produced from 1987 to 2009. Its 498 cc twin produces approximately 37 kW (50 hp) and is renowned for its toughness and reliability. The lightweight fairing provides wind protection without adding significant weight. At approximately 196 kg the GPZ 500 S is easy to handle. In the Netherlands it was widely used as a first A2-licence bike.
The GPZ 500 S remains popular as a first bike after passing the A2 test: the ergonomics are simultaneously upright and sporty, the power level is unsurprising, and maintenance is cheap. Modern equivalents compete via the Honda CBR500R and Yamaha YZF-R3. Used supply is healthy in the Netherlands, primarily from riders who have moved up to a larger class.

What to check before buying
- Check carburettor synchronisation; poorly synced carbs cause vibration and rough idle
- Inspect inside the fuel tank for rust; a common problem on bikes that have been stored for extended periods
- Ask about the charging system condition; the alternator and voltage regulator are known wear points
- Check chain and sprocket wear; beginner owners often neglect chain tension and lubrication
- Inspect the frame and fork legs for straightness after possible minor drops; beginner ownership increases the likelihood of low-speed incidents
