About the Indian Chief
The Indian Chief has been the flagship cruiser platform since Polaris revived Indian Motorcycle in 2011. Through 2021 the Chief used a large steel frame and the Thunderstroke 111 (1811 cc) V-twin. From 2022 the name covers the modernised Chief family with a round headlight, classic proportions and the Thunderstroke 116 (1890 cc) V-twin producing around 162 Nm of torque. A 4-inch round TFT display, ride modes and cruise control are standard. Wet weight sits near 300 kg with seat height around 660 mm.
The Chief targets riders who want a large, classically styled American cruiser for B-road touring and short tours. The low seat and broad saddle make it surprisingly accessible, but the weight is noticeable in car parks. Direct rivals include the Harley-Davidson Softail Standard, Heritage Classic and Triumph Rocket 3. There is no fairing or luggage from the factory, for touring duty look at the Chieftain or Roadmaster. On older Thunderstroke 111 examples, ask about stator service and check for oil weeping at the cylinder base.
