Gold Wing GL1500 (1988–2000)
GenerationThe GL1500 Gold Wing combines the 1,520cc flat-six with shaft drive, reverse and a large touring fairing. Standard, Interstate, Aspencade and SE differ mainly in comfort equipment; the F6C Valkyrie is a separate cruiser family.
About the Honda GL 1500
The Honda GL1500 Gold Wing is the six-cylinder tourer that succeeded the GL1200 from 1988 through 2000. Its 1,520cc liquid-cooled flat-six is recorded in Dutch registration data at 74 kW and 101 hp. With reverse, shaft drive, extensive fairing and generous luggage capacity, it is a true long-distance tourer; it is not an F6C Valkyrie, even though both models share the flat-six basis.
Within the GL1500 family there are Standard, Interstate, Aspencade and SE versions, but the core engine and production period remain the same. Differences are mainly comfort, audio, suspension and equipment. On a used bike, establish the actual trim rather than relying on ‘Gold Wing’ in the title. A maintained GL1500 can cover high mileage, but age makes cooling and fuel hoses, brakes, suspension, reverse function and body panels more important than the odometer alone.

What to check before buying
- Check coolant hoses, radiator, water pump and fans for leakage or age; an overheating flat-six is not a minor problem.
- Test reverse, clutch and all six gears with the engine warm; hesitation or unusual noise needs diagnosis before purchase.
- Inspect final-drive oil, driveshaft and rear-wheel bearings, and ask when they were last checked.
- Test audio, cruise control, air suspension and electrical accessories one by one; trim determines what should be fitted.
- Check fairing panels, luggage mounts, steering stops and brakes for damage or deferred maintenance; original plastics are expensive.
