About this model

About the Honda CB 750

The Honda CB 750 launched in 1969 as the CB 750 Four and is widely considered the first mass-produced superbike: a transverse air-cooled inline-four with a single overhead cam, four carburettors and a hydraulic front disc brake that was unprecedented on a production motorcycle. Honda built the original SOHC K-series essentially unchanged until 1978, after which DOHC variants kept the platform alive. In 1992 the nameplate returned as the CB 750 Seven Fifty (RC42), again with an air-cooled 747 cc inline-four but tuned for a flatter torque curve and easier daily use rather than outright top-end power.

On the Dutch used market both generations show up. The Seven Fifty is a popular first big bike and city tourer: upright ergonomics, predictable handling, a forgiving clutch and cheap parts. Early Fours are now classics, mainly bought by collectors who want a documented, original-condition example. Period rivals are the Suzuki GS 750, Kawasaki Z 750 and Yamaha XJ 750. On any CB 750, verify that the frame and engine numbers match the registration and that previous maintenance was done with the right parts.

Before you buy

What to check before buying

  • Check the four-carburettor bank for synchronisation and leaking float bowls; long storage often causes varnish and stuck slides.

  • Check the Seven Fifty (RC42) for oil seepage at the cylinder head and valve cover gaskets; a known issue at higher mileages.

  • Check the frame on early CB 750 Fours for corrosion around the steering head and swingarm pivot; reproduction frames do exist.

  • Check the exhaust (4-into-2 or 4-into-4) for originality and rust-through; complete factory sets are scarce and expensive.

  • Check the wiring loom for amateur modifications and inspect the starter motor and clutch cable for wear.
