About the Harley Davidson Springer Softail
The Harley-Davidson Springer Softail (FXSTS) is a Softail cruiser featuring a retro springer front fork, produced from 1988 to 2006. The spring-girder fork design is inspired by pre-war Harley geometry and gives the model its distinctive visual identity. The hidden rear suspension (Softail frame) creates the illusion of a rigid rear while still providing damping. Engine: Evolution (1340 cc) until 1999, then Twin Cam 88 (1450 cc).
The Springer Softail targets riders who want the nostalgic aesthetic of a classic chopper combined with modern riding comfort. The low seat position and relaxed riding posture suit day rides and city use. It demands more maintenance than contemporary models. Competes with other Softail variants such as the Heritage Softail and Fat Boy as an iconic American custom model.

What to check before buying
- Check the springer front fork for pin and bushing wear; the pivot pins of the springer design wear with neglect, causing vague steering.
- Inspect the Evolution engine (pre-2000) for oil pressure and valve wear, particularly on the rear cylinder exhaust valves.
- Examine Softail frame junction points for hairline cracks around the hidden shock mounts; concealed spring loading can cause stress cracking under high loads.
- Assess the chrome springer components: chrome-plated steel on an exposed fork is susceptible to pitting and corrosion.
- Ask about Twin Cam 88 (post-1999) maintenance intervals for drive belt tension and cam chain tensioner wear.
