Generations and editions
Features and handling differ by generation. Use this overview to find the right version.
Years
2002 - 2004
2002–2004 998S
EditionThe 998S is the performance trim with a more highly tuned Testastretta, 100 kW and specific components. It remains part of the 998 family, but match it only where S is explicit in the name, advert or documentation.
Years
2002 - 2004
2002–2004 998R
EditionThe 998R is the rare homologation trim with a more powerful 998cc Testastretta and race-focused components. Verify serial numbers, ECU and original carbon parts carefully: an R badge or paint scheme alone does not prove the trim.
Years
2002 - 2004
2002–2004 998
GenerationThe regular 998 is the base Testastretta, producing 91 kW in the classic 916/996 architecture. This row deliberately requires no text match: where an advert has no S or R designation, it is the safe standard identity.
About the Ducati 998
The Ducati 998 is the final development of the 916/996 family, built from 2002 through 2004. Its liquid-cooled 998cc Testastretta L-twin sits in the classic steel trellis frame with single-sided swingarm. The regular 998 is the usable base version; the 998S and homologation-focused 998R are distinctly more powerful and should be assessed as separate trims. The 998 was succeeded by the 999, not directly by the 1098.
This is a collectible superbike for an owner who values service history above low mileage alone. Its riding position is compact and track-focused, while belts, desmo valves, dry clutch and cooling need specialist attention. On S and R bikes, verify the originality of engine, ECU, exhaust and bodywork: a standard 998 with accessories is not an S or R.

What to check before buying
- Check invoices for both timing belts and desmodromic-valve service; verify date, mileage and the specialist who carried it out.
- Listen to the dry clutch and test take-off for slip or persistent drag; also inspect the hydraulic cylinders for leaks.
- Inspect radiator, hoses and water pump for coolant traces, and check the fan and temperature display operate correctly.
- Examine the steering head, single-sided swingarm and trellis frame closely for crash damage, cracks and non-original paint or welding.
- For 998S and 998R bikes, verify engine, ECU and homologation details against documentation; incorrect parts materially affect both value and technical identity.
