The 916 SPS is the rare late homologation flagship; Senna versions are distinctive limited road trims within the same late 916 period. Treat both as collector bikes: verify serial numbers, original tank/bodywork and documentation before making a value claim.
Years
1997 - 1998
The late 916 retains the 916cc road engine but is the final production phase before the 996. Use year, original bodywork and frame/engine numbers to distinguish it from SPS or Senna trims; provenance is essential on a classic.
Years
1994 - 1996
The 916 SP is the early homologation-focused trim with stronger engine and race modifications. Match only with demonstrable SP identity; original engine/frame codes and race parts are much more reliable than paint or stickers.
Years
1994 - 1996
The early 916 is Tamburini’s original 916cc superbike with single-sided swingarm, trellis frame and underseat exhausts. The standard road bike demands strict belt and desmo maintenance; also inspect water pump, connectors and original provenance.
The Ducati 916 is an iconic Italian superbike designed by Massimo Tamburini and produced from 1994 to 1998. Its water-cooled L-twin of 916 cc with desmodromic valve actuation produced 114 hp in standard road trim. The single underseat rear shock, the upward-opening exhaust pipes and the minimal under-belly fairing are instantly recognisable. The 916 dominated the World Superbike Championship with Carl Fogarty and claimed four constructors' titles. Its design set a template for superbike aesthetics that endures to this day.
The 916 is a machine for experienced riders with a passion for Italian sporting heritage. The aggressive clip-on position is demanding in traffic and on longer tours, but on fast roads it delivers a directness few contemporaries could match. Direct rivals in period were the Honda RC45 and Yamaha YZF750. Well-maintained examples are now established classics with steadily rising values.
