2015–2019 · Gen 1

About the Bmw S 1000 XR
The BMW S 1000 XR combines the four-cylinder engine of the S 1000 RR with an upright adventure-sport riding position. Since 2015 it has targeted riders who want high performance and long-distance ability in one motorcycle. The 999cc inline-four is smooth, while the suspension, electronics and wind protection make the XR suited to fast touring. The second generation brought a major update with more power, lower weight and newer rider aids.
The XR is not a lightweight trail bike: it is happiest on tarmac, fast corners and long motorway stretches. The tall seat gives a good view, but the wide engine and weight require experience at low speed. On a used bike, check valve, chain, brake and ESA/Dynamic Damping Control maintenance. Also verify software updates and the operation of the quickshifter and riding modes. Rivals include the Ducati Multistrada V4, KTM 1290 Super Duke GT and Yamaha Tracer 9 GT; the BMW's sporty four-cylinder character sets it apart.

What to check before buying
- Confirm that valve-clearance service, software updates and recalls are documented.
- Test the quickshifter, riding modes and Dynamic ESA for warnings or irregular operation.
- Inspect the chain, sprockets and rear-wheel bearings; fast touring can accelerate wear.
- Check brake discs and fork seals for wear or damage from hard sport riding.
