Years
1951 - 1951
The 1951 R 67 is the original 594 cc OHV touring boxer with 26 hp, a four-speed gearbox and shaft drive. It is the one-year base model before the R 67/2; do not use the later 28 hp and duplex-brake specifications.
The BMW R 67 was built only in 1951 as BMW's first 600 cc motorcycle of the post-war period. It combines a new 594 cc OHV boxer producing 26 hp with the R 51/2 chassis, shaft drive and a four-speed gearbox. BMW positioned it as a smooth, torquey tourer that particularly suited sidecar use. The R 67 is not the later R 67/2: that revision gained two hp and new duplex brakes.
When buying, year, frame number, engine identification and correct original brake specification are essential. Inspect engine, transmission, shaft, plunger suspension, telescopic fork and 6V electrics carefully. Since the original model lasted only one year, matching numbers, appropriate parts and a documented restoration matter more than a cosmetically attractive but mixed-specification example.
