The BMW R 18 is a heavyweight cruiser launched in 2020 as BMW's answer to the Harley-Davidson Heritage and Indian Chief. Its 1,802 cc air-cooled flat-twin (the Big Boxer) is the largest boxer engine BMW has ever production-built, producing 67 kW (91 hp) and 158 Nm at just 3,000 rpm. Power is delivered through a single dry clutch, six-speed gearbox and exposed shaft drive in a tubular double-cradle frame with telescopic forks. The styling references the 1936 BMW R 5 directly.
The R 18 is an uncompromising cruiser: long wheelbase, low 690 mm seat, wide bars and forward foot controls. It is built for relaxed boulevard riding and short-to-medium touring, not sport or off-road use. At over 340 kg fully fuelled, parking and low-speed manoeuvres are heavy work.
