About the Indian Springfield
The Indian Springfield has been the detachable-bagger member of the Chief family since 2016, marrying classic valanced fenders, a wide headlight nacelle and leather saddlebags to the 1811cc (111 cubic inch) Thunderstroke V-twin. The air-cooled 49-degree twin drives through a six-speed gearbox and shaft, with output settled around 70 kW and a wet weight near 375 kg. A detachable windscreen and quick-release saddlebags let owners switch between weekend cruiser and middle-distance tourer in five minutes, a nod to Indian's historic factory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The Springfield targets riders who want classic American cruiser presence with enough comfort and torque for a long weekend in the Alps. Cruise control, ABS and keyless ignition are standard on recent model years; later updates added the Pathfinder LED headlight and Ride Command infotainment. It is not a sporting machine, the low 660 mm seat, wide bars and long wheelbase reward relaxed riding rather than corner-carving. Closest competitors are the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic and Road King.

What to check before buying
- Check for oil seepage around the Thunderstroke cylinder heads and gaskets; a known issue at higher mileage.
- Test the shaft drive for play and listen for clunks; rear bevel gears are costly to replace.
- Inspect the chrome fenders and saddlebag latches for corrosion; Dutch winter salt is hard on the finish.
- Confirm the Ride Command infotainment (2020-on) firmware is current; outdated software causes map and Bluetooth glitches.
- Ask about hydraulic-lifter service history; poor maintenance leads to top-end ticking on cold starts.
