Years
2014 - 2018
This all-new Adventure uses the partially liquid-cooled boxer with a wet clutch and ride-by-wire. It feels markedly stronger and more modern, with the characteristic wide tank and LC bodywork.
Years
2010 - 2013
The DOHC generation gained twin-cam cylinder heads and stronger performance while retaining the classic air/oil-cooled character. Tank capacity and the long-distance Adventure chassis remained broadly unchanged.
Years
2006 - 2009
The first R 1200 GS Adventure combines the air/oil-cooled boxer with a large 33-litre tank, longer suspension and rugged touring equipment. Its older cylinder heads distinguish it from the later DOHC version.
The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure was the heavy-duty long-distance variant of the R 1200 GS from 2006 to 2018, built for world travel. The 1,170 cc boxer makes 110-125 hp and is paired with a 33-litre tank, crash bars, longer-travel suspension, a 19-inch front wheel and a taller screen. From 2014 onwards it shared the air/liquid-cooled DOHC cylinder head with the regular GS and added ride modes, ASC, ABS Pro and optional ESA.
The Adventure targets touring riders planning weeks-long expeditions. Wet weight is around 260 kg and seat height sits at 890-910 mm, so it is genuinely tall; long inseams help and a lower seat is available as an option. Competitors are the KTM 1290 Super Adventure, Triumph Tiger 1200 XR/Explorer and Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports. The Adventure remains in strong demand on the Dutch used market, holding its value well thanks to the active long-distance touring community.
