Years2003–2005
The later RT gained two spark plugs per cylinder for cleaner combustion and smoother low-speed running. Appearance changed little, so model year or the twin-spark designation is the best identifier.

Years2001–2002
The early R 1150 RT uses one spark plug per cylinder and BMW's servo-assisted integral ABS. Its full fairing, electric screen and relaxed riding position make it a classic long-distance tourer.

The BMW R1150RT is a fully equipped touring motorcycle produced from 2001 to 2005. It is powered by an air/oil-cooled 1130 cc boxer twin producing 98 hp and 98 Nm of torque, with shaft drive and Paralever rear suspension. Electrically adjustable windscreen, integrated ABS, heated grips, and extensive luggage options were standard or available. The R1150RT set a benchmark for long-distance touring comfort in its segment.
The R1150RT suits taller riders who prioritise comfort without sacrificing power. Ample torque across the rev range, good two-up ergonomics, and a large fuel tank make it well suited to extended European tours. On the used market it now represents strong value, a dependable, well-engineered tourer at a modest price. Its contemporaries included the Honda GL1800 Gold Wing and Kawasaki GTR1000.
Check the Paralever rubbers and driveshaft coupler for wear; replacement is labour-intensive at high mileages.
Inspect the Integral ABS system for fault codes and check the front-wheel sensor cables for chafing.
Check the dry single-plate clutch for wear; neglected examples can deteriorate quickly.
Ask about the condition of the electrical wiring, particularly the heated grips and electrically adjustable windscreen; poor connections are common.
Check the fuel tap and, on early carburetted models, verify idle quality and carburettor synchronisation.
