About the Honda VFR
Honda VFR is the umbrella name for Honda's V4 sport-tourer line, headlined by the VFR750F (1986-1997, RC24/RC36), VFR800 (1998-2017, RC46) and VFR1200F (2010-2016, SC63). The heart of every VFR is a 90-degree V4 engine, a layout Honda developed on track in the early 1980s with the RC30 (VFR750R) and translated into comfortable, sporting street bikes. Listings marketed simply as "VFR" without a displacement are usually VFR750F or early VFR800.
The VFR series appeals to riders who want the V4 sound and character paired with Honda reliability for long-distance touring, sporty rides and two-up travel with luggage. It cruises calmly on the motorway, stays composed in corners and demands little routine maintenance. Period rivals were the Yamaha FZR750 and Suzuki GSX-R 750 in the VFR750 era, and the Yamaha FJR1300 and Kawasaki Z1000SX in the VFR800/1200 era.

What to check before buying
- Ask for regulator/rectifier (R/R) history; all VFR generations up to ~2010 suffer overheating R/R units; MOSFET upgrades are standard practice.
- Check valve clearance history; VFR800 V-TEC needs it every 26,000 km, a costly job due to the four-rocker valvetrain.
- Inspect the under-engine exhaust collector for inside-out rust; early VFR750/800 4-into-2 systems rot at the welds.
- Test clutch action and dragging at standstill; the VFR1200F hydraulic clutch can develop slack from worn master or slave cylinders.
- Ask about the shaft drive (VFR1200F only) or chain drive (VFR750/800); check shaft oil changes or chain stretch and sprocket wear respectively.
