The BMW R 1100 RS is a sport-tourer produced by BMW from 1993 to 2001 as the first motorcycle to feature BMW's revolutionary Telelever front suspension. The 1085cc air-cooled boxer twin produces 90 hp and is housed inside a fully enclosed fairing that delivers effective wind protection at motorway speeds. The Telelever system separates braking forces from suspension compression, resulting in composed handling under hard braking, a significant advancement over conventional telescopic forks at the time.
The R 1100 RS targets experienced riders who want a versatile touring motorcycle with genuine sporting dynamics. The riding position is slightly forward-leaning but not aggressively sporty. The motor is renowned for reliability and is particularly suited to longer touring trips. It competes with the Honda VFR750 and Kawasaki ZX-6R in touring trim, but the BMW offers a distinctly richer touring character underpinned by the Telelever technology.
Check the Telelever front suspension for wear at the aluminium pivot points; worn ball joints cause play that produces vague steering response.
Inspect the Paralever rear suspension for play in the driveshaft universal joint; clunking under acceleration signals a worn cardan connection.
Look for oil leaks at the cylinder head gaskets of the air-cooled boxer; this is a known weakness on older examples.
Ask about ABS module condition; the early-generation ABS on the R 1100 RS is reliable but failures are expensive to repair outside the BMW network.
