Years1992–2003
The Diversion generation is more softly tuned for commuting and affordable touring. A half fairing, smooth four-cylinder engine and low seat make it more approachable than the original XJ600.

Years1984–1991
The original XJ600 is an air-cooled four-cylinder roadster with distinctly 1980s sporting hardware. It is lighter and livelier than the later Diversion and age-related condition matters greatly when buying.

The Yamaha XJ 600 is an air-cooled four-cylinder family that evolved from a sporting roadster into the practical Diversion between 1984 and 2003. Early XJ600s feel livelier and make more power; the later XJ600S Diversion is more softly tuned and adds a half fairing, low seat and useful touring ergonomics. Both generations use carburettors and a conventional steel chassis.
For buyers, condition matters more than mileage. A properly synchronised engine should run smoothly, start from cold without excessive choke and shift without abnormal noise. The XJ 600 suits commuting, affordable touring and owners learning routine maintenance, although its brakes and suspension feel basic by modern standards. On early bikes, check parts availability and use the model year and type code to identify the exact generation offered.
Start the engine completely cold and check for cam-chain rattle or blue exhaust smoke.
Inspect the carburettors and intake rubbers for leaks, contamination and uneven idle after storage.
Check steering-head bearings, fork seals and the rear shock; wear makes the already soft chassis feel vague.
Verify charging voltage and inspect connectors, wiring loom and fuse box for corrosion or heat damage.
