City Bike 49
GenerationThe compact original City Bike family with a 49 cc single-cylinder two-stroke, automatic drive and 5-inch wheels. The later City Bike 90 designation is an update within this family; use frame and type details for an exact year or parts match.
About the Benelli City Bike
The Benelli City Bike is a genuine, ultra-compact 49 cc mini moped from the late 1980s and early 1990s, not a generic label for city transport. It combines a single-cylinder two-stroke engine with automatic drive, very small 5-inch wheels and a simple tubular frame. Benelli heritage material lists the City Bike from 1987; a market reference records the City Bike 50 for 1988–1993. The later City Bike 90 name denotes an updated version, not a larger 90 cc engine.
It is an enthusiast and short-distance town moped rather than a modern scooter. Its low mass makes it easy to handle, but the small wheels, drum brakes and limited speed call for realistic expectations in traffic. Always confirm frame number, year and exact trim when buying. Parts catalogues often mix City Bike, City Bike 90 and other Benelli 50 models, so order from measurements and the type plate rather than the model name alone.

What to check before buying
- Check the frame number, year and type plate: City Bike, City Bike 90 and other Benelli 50 models are often mixed up in parts catalogues.
- Check the two-stroke for easy cold starting, compression, air leaks and correct premix lubrication; ask which fuel-oil ratio was used.
- Inspect the drive belt, variator, clutch and final chain for slip, hesitation, wear or unusual noise.
- Inspect the 5-inch tyres, rims, wheel bearings and steering head carefully; damage or aged tyres have an outsized effect on stability at this size.
- Check both drum brakes, cables, lights and wiring for even operation, corrosion and old repairs.
