About the Yamaha Tmax
The Yamaha T-MAX is the most influential maxi-scooter on the market and defined the category at its introduction in 2001. Powered by a 499 cc parallel-twin with fuel injection, the T-MAX distinguishes itself from other scooters through its motorcycle-like handling and low-mounted engine chassis. With 39 hp (T-MAX 500) it is powerful enough for motorway runs and longer tours, while the automatic transmission provides the typical scooter convenience. The T-MAX 500 was produced from 2001 to 2011 and was succeeded by the T-MAX 530 and later T-MAX 560.
The T-MAX targets riders who want the functional benefits of a scooter combined with the riding pleasure of a genuine motorcycle. The compact dimensions, good luggage capacity through under-seat storage, and comfortable two-up riding make the T-MAX 500 popular with commuters and light tourers. Rivals are scarce; the T-MAX has been virtually without competition in its segment.

What to check before buying
- Check the CVT belt and variator rollers for wear; replacement is required around 20,000–30,000 km with intensive use.
- Inspect the front fork for oil leaks and check adjustable ride height systems for correct function.
- Check ABS brakes for correct operation with a wet-road test ride.
- Check the battery and charging system for age; the T-MAX has a relatively large electrical system.
- Check the water pump and thermostat for leaks; a regular concern on high-mileage examples.
