Generations and editions

Years
2011 - 2017
Thunderbird 1700 / Commander / LT (2011-2017)
EditionThe 1700 cc variants build on the Thunderbird 1600 with a larger bore and more torque. Commander and LT are identifiable touring/cruiser derivatives; match them only when the advert states that name or 1700 cc.
Years
2009 - 2017
Thunderbird 1600 (2009-2017)
GenerationThe modern Thunderbird 1600 is the large parallel-twin cruiser with belt drive and strong low-rpm torque. Its low seat and substantial wet weight favour relaxed riding; inspect belt, pulleys and brakes carefully.
Years
1995 - 2004
Thunderbird 900 (1995-2004)
GenerationThe first Hinckley Thunderbird combines classic cruiser styling with a liquid-cooled 885 cc triple. It is not a 1600 cc cruiser: identify it by compact proportions, chain drive and three-cylinder engine.
About the Triumph Thunderbird
Triumph used the Thunderbird name for two fundamentally different Hinckley generations. The 1995-2004 Thunderbird 900 is a classically styled, liquid-cooled 885 cc triple on Triumph's modular platform. In 2009 the much larger Thunderbird 1600 arrived: a belt-driven cruiser with a 1,597 cc parallel twin. The 1700 version and the Commander/LT derivatives later used the same platform.
That distinction matters to buyers: a 900 rides and feels like a relaxed retro triple, whereas the modern 1600/1700 is a heavy cruiser with far more low-rpm torque. Always confirm model year, capacity and variant instead of relying on the name alone. The older triple suits enthusiasts of classic Triumph engineering; the modern cruiser suits unhurried touring and riders wanting a low seat, belt drive and a mature long-distance riding position.

What to check before buying
- On a Thunderbird 900, check carburettor balance, cold starting, inlet rubbers and fuel hoses; an uneven idle often points to deferred maintenance.
- On the 900, inspect radiator, coolant hoses and water pump for leaks, then check connectors and charging voltage.
- On 1600/1700 models, inspect the drive belt and pulleys for stone damage, wear, alignment and correct tension.
- Inspect chrome, exhaust and the lower frame for corrosion, especially on bikes stored outdoors.
- Test ride with attention to steering head, brake discs, suspension and battery/starter performance; the substantial weight loads these parts noticeably.
