Triumph 3TA
GenerationThe 1957–1966 Triumph 3TA is the 349 cc 'Twenty One' parallel twin with nacelle-style front and simple classic engineering. Check engine numbers, oil tightness, ignition and charging, frame and forks, plus brakes, tyres and the quality of any restoration.
About the Triumph 3TA
The Triumph 3TA, also called Twenty One, is a British 349 cc unit-construction parallel twin introduced in 1957. Engine and gearbox share one casing, then an important step for Triumph's smaller twins. Early fully enclosed 'bathtub' bodywork aimed to look modern and reduce maintenance; later examples adopted conventional mudguards and side panels. With roughly 18–20 hp, four speeds and modest mass, the 3TA was intended for commuting and gentle touring.
Today the 3TA is a charming classic, but correct year and body style identification matter. Many bathtub panels were removed historically and are now scarce. Check sludge trap/crankshaft oiling, oil return, primary chain, clutch and gearbox. Electrics and ignition are often modernised; judge quality and documentation. Inspect frame, tank and matching engine/frame numbers. A complete original Twenty One is worth more than a generic converted lightweight Triumph.
