About this model
About the Ktm 125 SX
The KTM 125 SX is a pure motocross bike for the 125 cc two-stroke class, for decades the entry-level choice for serious mx racers. Powered by a water-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke of 125 cc producing around 34 hp at a weight of just 86 kg, it delivers an exceptional power-to-weight ratio. KTM has produced the 125 SX since the early 1990s, refining engine character, suspension and ergonomics every year, the 2023 generation features a new frame and updated WP XACT fork.
The KTM 125 SX is built for the racetrack, not public roads. It targets young motocross riders and experienced racers competing in the lightweight 125 class. The high-revving power band demands skill and mechanical awareness; absolute beginners are better served by a 4-stroke trail bike. Direct competitors are the Yamaha YZ125 and Honda CR125R. On the used market, younger bikes with a documented service history are by far the safest buy.

Before you buy
What to check before buying
- Check the top-end (piston, cylinder bore) for wear: a 125 cc two-stroke needs a top-end rebuild every 20–40 hours of use; always ask for the service log.
- Inspect the exhaust valve (RAVE) for carbon build-up and correct operation; a seized valve causes a significant power loss.
- Check the flywheel and ignition lead for damage from mud and stone impacts, which are common in motocross use.
- Verify the condition of the WP fork: sag setting, oil level and leaking seals; a full service is expensive.
- Look for bends or cracks in the frame, especially around the steering head and engine mounts; impact damage from hard crashes is not always visible externally.
