Years

The Yamaha YZ 400 was Yamaha's open-class motocrosser from 1976 through 1979. It is a pure off-road machine, not a road motorcycle. The 1976 YZ400C developed the MX400 concept and Yamaha refined the series each year. The D received a plastic fuel tank for 1977, while the 1978 E gained an aluminium swingarm. The 1979 YZ400F introduced a new short-stroke engine. This profile covers only the YZ400C, YZ400D, YZ400E and YZ400F; the later YZ465 and YZ490 belong to their own model pages.
