XL1000V PGM-FI (2003–2006)

XL1000V carburettor (1999–2002)
GenerationThe first Varadero 1000 uses a carburetted 996cc V-twin in a roomy, heavy adventure-touring chassis. The early SD01 series has a more abrupt throttle response and higher fuel consumption than later injected models.

About this model
About the Honda Varadero
The Honda XL 1000 V Varadero is an adventure touring motorcycle powered by a 996 cc liquid-cooled V-twin engine, produced from 1999 to 2011. The Varadero combines the potent engine from the VTR 1000 FireStorm with adventure styling and high handlebars. With standard ABS (on later models), optional integrated luggage and a substantial fairing, Honda positioned it as the ideal long-distance tourer for the road-biased adventurer.
The XL 1000 V targets touring riders who want to mix tarmac with occasional light off-road use. The high seat height of 855 mm is a consideration for shorter riders, but the 250 kg weight keeps it stable and comfortable on motorways. It competed with the BMW R 1150 GS, Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and Yamaha XT 1200 Z Super Ténéré. A particularly popular used buy in the Netherlands for its strong reliability record.

Before you buy
What to check before buying
- Check radiator hoses and thermostat condition; overheating in traffic or hot weather is a known complaint given the V-twin's heat output.
- Inspect the HISS immobiliser sensor for faults; key recognition issues appear with age and can be difficult to diagnose.
- Check clutch wear; the wet clutch from the VTR engine is susceptible to slipping under heavy urban use.
- Verify front fork stanchions for pitting; bikes with extensive wet-weather use are particularly vulnerable.
- Check rear suspension linkage bearings for wear; this is often identified late and overlooked in used-bike inspections.
