2008–2010 DN-01 (HFT)
GenerationThe DN-01 is Honda’s striking scooter-cruiser crossover, with a 680cc V-twin and hydraulic HFT transmission that can run automatically or be shifted manually. Its low seat, broad fairing and shaft drive make it relaxed for commuting and touring, but it is heavier and more complex than a conventional 650 twin. Check HFT take-off smoothness, fault codes, final-drive oil service and damage to the large plastic panels.
About the Honda DN 01
The Honda DN-01 is an automatic cruiser powered by a 680cc parallel-twin four-stroke engine, produced from 2008 to 2010. Its most distinctive feature is the Human Friendly Transmission (HFT), a continuously variable transmission with two riding modes, fully automatic or manual via handlebar buttons. The bike was a technological experiment combining automatic riding with a low-rider aesthetic.
The DN-01 is aimed at riders who want the simplicity of a scooter combined with the look and feel of a proper motorcycle. The low centre of gravity, low seat height and absence of a clutch lever make it accessible for riders who struggle with manual gear changes. There was little direct competition, the DN-01 was unique in its segment.

What to check before buying
- Check the CVT transmission for correct operation in both modes; HFT faults are expensive and complex to repair.
- Inspect electrics for fault codes using a diagnostic tool; the complex drivetrain has multiple sensors prone to failure.
- Check for oil leaks around the transmission; the CVT housing has multiple seals that can deteriorate with age.
- Inspect the battery for condition; long-stored examples are prone to discharge due to the complex electronics.
- Check brakes and suspension for wear; the low-slung design makes the bike heavier than expected during servicing.
