About the Hercules K 50
The Hercules K 50 is an early German lightweight motorcycle introduced late in 1963. The original series uses an air-cooled Sachs 50cc two-stroke, five speeds and a full-swing chassis; output rose in 1964 from about 4.5 to 5.2hp. It is not the same as the later K 50 Ultra or Ultra 50, so type plate and frame number are necessary for a correct restoration.
For a buyer, the complete original drivetrain matters more than shiny paint. Inspect engine, five-speed gearbox, chain, brakes and specific chassis details for wear or incorrectly fitted later parts. A documented early K 50 with the correct Sachs engine is the best basis. Always test cold starting and shifting; a poorly running two-stroke can hide simple adjustment or a full rebuild.

What to check before buying
- Verify type plate, frame number and early K 50 versus K 50 Ultra/Ultra 50 before assigning parts or year.
- Check the 50cc Sachs two-stroke for compression, crank seals, carburettor, air filter and correct premix.
- Test five-speed gearbox, clutch, chain and sprockets under load for jumping gears, slip and incorrect gearing.
- Check ignition, charging and wiring for corrosion, wrong coils and incorrect 6V conversion.
- Inspect full-swing chassis, fork, brakes, wheels, tank and exhaust for corrosion, cracks and later mismatched parts.
