About the Harley Davidson WLA
The Harley-Davidson WLA is the military version of the Harley-Davidson Model W series, produced from 1941 to 1945 for the US and Allied armies. The WLA (W = 45ci, L = heavy-duty equipment, A = Army) is fitted with a 745 cc side-valve flathead V-twin and adapted for field use: rifle scabbard, blackout paint, protected ignition cables, and widened mudguards. More than 88,000 units were built; many were declared surplus after the war and entered the civilian market.
The WLA is today an iconic piece of American military heritage. It appeals exclusively to collectors and enthusiasts of WWII vehicles. Technical knowledge of flathead V-twins is required; parts are available through specialist suppliers. Original military accessories (ammunition pouch, leg guards) significantly enhance historical value. A classic favourite at veteran meets and commemoration parades.

What to check before buying
- Check the flathead engine for oil sealing at the cylinder head and crankcase; this is the most common technical issue on high-hour examples.
- Inspect all original military wiring for dry-rot and repair work; 80-year-old cables are a fire hazard and must have been fully replaced or inspected.
- Assess the condition of original military accessories: rifle scabbard, ammunition pouch, and leg guards are scarce and valuable but also frequently reproduced.
- Verify frame numbers for authenticity; the proportion of replica or restored WLAs is high; a genuine numbers-matching example commands a significant premium.
- Ask about brake drum condition; on aged examples, brake shoe material, drum wear, and wide-track drum alignment are the most important items to inspect.
